An education in local history

It’s time to learn a little bit more about the place we live.

Brant Museums and Galleries launched the second phase of its “Who Knew…” campaign last week, presenting more historical facts about Brantford to the community.

“Because of the success of our first campaign, we were able to generate additional community support to allow us to launch this second phase,” said Joan Kanigan, executive director of the Brant Historical Society. “This is going to be far more interactive and far more engaging and its giving us an opportunity to explore those facts that make our community so interesting.”

The campaign features an online trivia game that tests participants knowledge of local history. Three videos will be added to the site each week for the next six weeks, followed by a skill testing question for each video.

For three correct answers, participants are given a ballot for the chance to win one of many weekly prizes and an opportunity to be part of a grand prize draw for a $4,000 cruise gift certificate from Sears Travel and Encore Cruises.

One entry per person will be accepted each week, but additional ballots can be obtained by visiting one of 13 participating museums and galleries.

Participating museums and galleries include Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead, the Bell Homestead, Brant Museums and Archives, the Brantford Arts Block, the Burford Township Historical Society Museum, Canadian Military Heritage Museum, Chiefswood National Historic Site, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, Mohawk Chapel, Myrtleville House Museum, the Personal Computer Museum, St. George Museum and Woodland Cultural Centre.

“We wanted to do this in a way that invited people to understand their community better, that drove traffic into our museums and galleries and to create a sense of pride in who we are as a community,” said Barry English, president and senior creative director of TDG Marketing, a sponsor of the campaign.

The Who Knew… campaign is funded by the City of Brantford, Enterprise Brant, Tourism Brantford and TDG Marketing. Prizes have been donated by Sears Travel and Encore Cruises, the Brantford Blast, the Sun Life Curling Classic, Treks in the Wild, Forks of the Grand, Northridge Golf Course and Sunquest Vacations.
